What is DELE?

The DELE (Diplomas de español como lengua extranjera) is a certificate of linguistic competence organized by the Cervantes Institute.

It is aimed at all people whose Spanish is not their mother tongue and who wish to leave in a Spanish-speaking country, whether to study in a university, to do an internship or even to work. It opens you the gates of Spain but also of all the South American continent (except Brazil).

This diploma justifies an advanced level of Spanish. This B2 level Spanish certificate certifies that the student can “communicate with Spanish speakers with sufficient fluidity and naturalness, so that the conversation takes place without any of the interlocutors having to make any effort. Clear and detailed texts on various topics, as well as a point of view on general themes, indicating the advantages and disadvantages of the different options. Including if they are of a technical nature, provided they belong to its field of specialty. ” Read more information at dele.org

DELE Examen

The duration of the examination and its degree of difficulty depend of course on the level. Thus for the A1 test, the writing lasts 90 minutes whereas for the B2 it lasts 210 minutes. Several exercises or questions of vocabulary and grammar allow to verify the acquired.

For example, the B2 level exam consists of four tests: reading comprehension, written expression and interaction, listening comprehension and oral expression and interaction. Successful completion of the examination requires a sufficient mark to obtain “APTE” approval.

How to prepare?

There is a need for time to prepare for this review. You have to train under the same conditions as the final exam (limited time and real subjects). It is advisable to prepare 3 to 6 months before the exam (depending on the learning of each one) in order to integrate the form of the tests and to be ready for D-Day.

You can find annals on the official website of DELE in order to train you correctly. But we advise you to immerse yourself in the language without waiting.

[This article was originally published in Medical News Today and was written by PhD Catharine Paddock.]

For the first time, researchers show how a short test of brain wave patterns can predict how fast an adult can acquire a second language.

The study of how we differ in our ability to learn a second language is useful not only for understanding bilingualism, but also for researching the processes of learning and neural plasticity – how well the brain changes and adapts through life.

In the journal Brain and Language, researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle describe how a 5-minute measurement of resting-state brain activity explained 60 percent of the variability in second-language learning in a group of adult college students.

brain-activity

The 19 participants were aged 18-31 years and had no previous experience in learning French. For 8 weeks, they went to the research lab twice a week for a 30-minute, “immersive virtual reality,” computer-based training session to learn French.

Before the participants started their language training, they were invited to sit with their eyes closed for 5 minutes while wearing an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset.

The EEG headset measured naturally occurring patterns of brain activity in the form of alpha, beta, delta, gamma, and theta brain waves.

EEG patterns predicted ability to learn second language

The researchers compared the pre-learning brain wave patterns with various measures of language learning during and at the end of the training program.

At various stages of the program, the learner completed a quiz. If they attained a minimum score on the quiz, they could move to the next level. Using the quiz scores, the researchers were able to calculate how fast each participant progressed through the curriculum.

The participants also took a proficiency test when they completed the 8-week program. This measured, for example, how many lessons they had completed.

The results showed that while the fastest learner completed the lessons twice as fast as the slowest, both attained the same level of proficiency.

However, when the researchers compared learners’ EEG brain wave patterns from before the program with the various measures taken during and after the 8-week course, they found some interesting links.

For example, higher power in beta and gamma brain waves, and lower power in delta and theta waves, predicted faster second language learning.

This, together with other brain wave measures, led study leader Chantel Prat, an associate professor of psychology, and colleagues to conclude:

“We’ve found that a characteristic of a person’s brain at rest predicted 60 percent of the variability in their ability to learn a second language in adulthood.”

Neurofeedback training

So, does the finding mean that people whose brain wave patterns predict they are likely to be less successful or slower at learning should not try to learn a second language? Prof. Prat says not at all, and she gives two reasons.

First, the fact the brain wave patterns only predicted 60 percent of variability in learning means there is plenty of room for other important factors – such as motivation – to influence learning.

Second, it is possible, Prof. Prat explains, to alter one’s resting-state brain wave patterns with neurofeedback training – an approach where you can strengthen brain activity patterns that are linked to better thinking and learning skills.

She and her team are starting to investigate this angle. They are looking at aspects of brain function that are linked to being able to learn well, she says, and explains that their goal is to “use this research in combination with technologies such as neurofeedback training to help everyone perform at their best.”

“By studying individual differences in the brain, we’re figuring out key constraints on learning and information processing, in hopes of developing ways to improve language learning, and eventually, learning more generally.” – Prof. Chantel Prat

The idea is that people keen to learn a second language but who do not have the desirable brain wave patterns could perhaps use neurofeedback training to alter the patterns and help themselves learn faster.

Immersive virtual reality language training

The immersive virtual reality language training program that the researchers used in the study is called the Operational Language and Cultural Training System (OLCTS). It was developed using funds provided by the United States Office of Naval Research, who also funded the study.

The aim of OLCTS is to make service men and women proficient in a foreign language with 20 hours of training. The self-paced program guides the learner through scenes and stories where they communicate with different actors in the new language. A voice recognition component also allows them to check their pronunciation.

The following video is a short demonstration of how the learner uses OLCTS:

For the sake of viewer convenience, the content is shown below in the alternative language. You may click the link to switch the active language.

[This post was originally published on Lingotastik]

By Teddy Nee, a passionate language learner and blogger.

“Why should you bother learning another language when you already know English?”
Someone might have ever asked this question to you before, and how did you react to it? Or let’s assume nobody had asked this question to you, how would you answer it when you are asked?

I was frequently asked by either my friends or acquaintances why do you learn languages. They know and we all know that I know English because if you can understand this text, it means that I know English. Having been asked that question, I have only one answer, “Not everyone is eager to speak English or can express themselves well in English.”

We should accept the fact that nowadays we can get information from other countries in other languages much easier than, let’s say, 20 years ago. It mainly because of the internet. The internet has really changed our way of life, and it even has created so many jobs that weren’t existed before. I work as an IT engineer, and it is not easy to explain about what I really do to my parents, or even to my grandparents because what I am doing did not exist in their time when they were at my age.

So, this easy access to information has caused globalization to happen where companies can establish partnership with overseas companies, and have the ability to expand their market even to much larger scope, not to mention inter countries, but inter continents.

english

English as a universal language
English language which originated from England has apparently became a universal language that two persons from different countries would use to communicate unconsciously because they thought English is supposed to be the language that everyone understands for international communication.

If you often gather information from the internet, you must have realized that most contents are available in English. Therefore, if you know English, you can get much more information that those who don’t know English. That’s the fact! However, I need to remind you that there is still limitation for using English to search for information, especially if the information is more personal that only speakers of the original language could have the privilege for the access.

Taking part in an international community
When we discuss about a universal language, a question might occur in mind, that is “What is a truly universal language?” and “How do we define a universal language?”. The United Nations even has 6 official languages — English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian. We might also be intrigued to talk about a constructed language for international communication, Esperanto.

Esperanto speakers around the world have been vigorously promoting Esperanto as the language for international communication. Nowadays, we can see many activities done in Esperanto, such as activities related to education, charity, science research, journalism, commerce, and so on. Although there are quite a lot of people who are still pessimistic and skeptical about Esperanto language being a human communication tool.

We need to have more knowledge about other language in order to get access to much more information, and to be able to get to know more people from other countries, especially those who don’t speak English or our languages.

On top of that, language learning is like an investment. Spending a little time and effort to learn a language that you could use for your whole life doesn’t seem to be a big deal.

Choosing a language to learn
When you search for, let’s say, top 10 most favorited languages in the world, top 10 languages with the most speakers, top 10 languages for job seekers, etc. you can get abundant of results. The most important is to know your goal, whether you want to learn the language because there is more job opportunities in your area or you want to learn the language that is completely different from that you have known or you want to learn a language that is similar with that you have known. Deciding the goal is the very first thing you need to do.

If you like challenge, you should choose to learn language from other language family. For example, if you know English, you can pick Hindi, Mandarin or Russian as your target language. If you want to quickly reach higher level of understanding in other language, you should choose to learn language from the same language family. For example, if you know Spanish, you can choose to learn Italian, Portuguese or French.

There is actually a rule of thumb that many language courses don’t teach you. If you want to impress your friends with the amount of languages that you know, learn languages from the same family group because they share so many similarities that you even already can understand a big portion of it without learning. Thus, it is not surprising to know a someone who knows 5-6 languages but those languages are from the same language family.

Depending on your geographical location, some languages might not be useful. Let’s say you will spend some months in Latin America. Your focus should be Spanish rather than Japanese, and perhaps, the second language could be Portuguese. However, any languages will likely be useful if your activities are internet-based since the majority of people around the world have had access to internet nowadays.

So I ask again. Why learn languages? Knowing more languages is always beneficial. Apart from giving you more opportunities to enjoy what speakers of those languages can enjoy, you can also enrich yourself by broaden your viewpoint and increasing your skills. Learning language also trains your brain and it certainly increase your intelligence. No wonder, many articles state the benefits of knowing more languages as if there is no downside of it.
